Overview of nRF Cloud

nRF Cloud, powered by Memfault helps teams develop, deploy, and manage power-efficient and reliable IoT devices. It is purpose-built for Nordic Semiconductor devices and offers a combination of critical cloud services and infrastructure, including device management (with OTA), device observability, and multi-technology Location Services. You can integrate all of these services onto your Nordic devices and use them in any combination.

nRF Cloud supports devices using any connectivity technology and using protocols including MQTT and CoAP. Direct cloud-to-cloud connectivity is also possible for some services using our REST APIs.

nRF Cloud is suitable for a wide range of different device types, from the most power-constrained to the most sophisticated, and you can configure it to suit your specific requirements. With nRF Cloud, developers can save months of time building custom infrastructure and get production-ready systems that scale without any additional maintenance burden.

Device management and OTA

nRF Cloud provides Device management services for any Nordic chip, from the nRF54, nRF53, and nRF52 Series to the nRF91 Series. The services include a scalable and secure firmware OTA update management and delivery system, configuration and provisioning services, and device-cloud message storage and routing. It also provides critical operational information about deployed devices, such as configuration status, current firmware version, and more, supporting your operational requirements.

Security Services

For nRF91 Series SiPs, nRF Cloud provides additional security services. Your nRF91 Series SiPs are shipped with an identity set by Nordic Semiconductor, which enables device authentication and remote provisioning. You do not need to manage keys during the device manufacturing process and can securely provision devices over-the-air once they are in the field.

Device observability

nRF Cloud offers observability services purpose-built for embedded devices. This service automates the collection of core dumps, metrics, and logs from your deployed devices. All data is collected, decoded, and made available for investigations and analysis in a web interface. The service is power optimized, has a lightweight memory footprint, and works with any connectivity technology. Observability makes it easier to identify and resolve issues happening on deployed devices without having to try and reproduce them, and without requiring any physical access to the device.

Location Services

Locating a device is a key use case for many applications and services. nRF Cloud Location Services offer power-efficient positioning through GNSS, Wi-Fi, and cellular technologies. You can use the services to locate devices directly, provide assistance and prediction data, or pass positioning data to your own application or service.

Getting started

You can get started with nRF Cloud services on your Nordic device at any time during the device's lifecycle.

The nRF Connect SDK provides ready-made libraries and multiple sample applications (for example, nRF Cloud Multi-service) that demonstrate the features of nRF Cloud. For a full list, see Additional nRF Cloud resources for a list of samples and libraries for the nRF Connect SDK that integrate with nRF Cloud.

If you have not used nRF Cloud before, take a look at our guide on Getting started with devices on nRF Cloud. The guide walks you through the steps required to set up your account and connect your first device.

If you get stuck, you can get help and support on DevZone.
